John Akimoto, the actor who played Ray, the ruggedly handsome head of the clan, in the 1987 movie "Mortal Kombat" was replaced by Tony Jaa. This is in keeping with the manga-inspired structure of the movie, which follows the story of two brothers (each played by a different actor) as they fight for power. The story is fascinating and entertaining, but it also has an underlying meaning about politics, families, and the rise and fall of empires.
In the first installment of the series, "Akimbo," the story of the clan is very much centered on family dynamics. The younger brother, Mo, wants to impress his dad and go to school so he can get into the University of London. His older brother, Akimbo, wants to fight for the family business, so he can become a warrior like his father, Gekko, who leads the clan.
In order to get his brother to agree to go to school, Gun sets up a challenge for his son. He makes Mouse Akimbo's Aku's Axe, and once he uses it, he can't ever use it again, for all eternity. That means that if Mouses Akimbo's Aku's Axe, Gun can have Aku back, which he claims is part of what Akuma is. The Aku in the story is a personification of evil, and is depicted as a terrifying ninja.
So Mo uses the Aku's Axe, and as a result of this, he is transformed into the evil Aku. After being caught with the weapon, he's put in a pit of snakes, so it doesn't seem like a metaphor. It becomes a bit more clear when he escapes and defeats all the guards that surround him. He gets away with the axe, and with his powers, he becomes the new evil Aku.
In the second episode, Akimbo and Mo go to fight Gekko. Gekko tells Akimbo that the first Aku was also called Akuma, which is another name for God. So maybe the brothers will learn that even empires can't stand for long and eventually fall.
Later, Mo's big brother, Quicksilver, visits the Akimbo and Mo to tell them about some of the battles that happened to him and his family. He tells them that the Battle of Tsushima, a time when Japan lost to the United States, was fought over a span of years. The battle of Shimonoseki, which is the battle of the White Lotus, is also the Akimbo's big brother's story and is where he becomes the King of Kura.
The third episode is titled "The Devil and Akimbo," and is a story about an empire who went to war with an ethnic minority, and then chose to become the demon that everyone knows. The clan decided to become the evil force in the end, but only after they were attacked by evil forces, and the third great prince of the country, Akuma, fell to evil. It seems that the empire finally realized that their empire didn't belong to them any longer, and the people they ruled no longer felt that they belonged to them, either. The evil forces killed the three great princes, and now their empire is dead, and they have fallen to evil themselves.
I really enjoyed this series, which was the first one to be adapted from a manga, and I'm glad that the movie came out on DVD. I also recommend watching the first movie first, as I believe that it shows off what the films have in store for us in the future.
